THEORY OF SEMIOTICS

A science that studies the life of signs within society and is a part of social and general psychology. Ferdinand de Saussure, a swiss linguist, believed that semiotics is concerned with everything that can be taken as a sign, and he called it semiology.

Connotation: A connotation is a commonly understood cultural or emotional association that any given word or phrase carries, in addition to its explicit or literal meaning, which is its denotation. A connotation is frequently described as either positive or negative, with regard to its pleasing or displeasing emotional connection.

Denotation: The denotation of a word is its central sense and the entire set of objects that can be contained in the word's meaning.

As you can see, the difference in the wording and the use of connotation that represents non-literal connections adds a level of depth and meaning.

As well as greater emotional investment to the film than the use of pure denotation.

Denotation and connotation difference in film and media boils down to literal vs non-literal meanings and symbolism which creates emotional depth to the story.
